There is no Christmas in Calabria without susumelle, the typical oval biscuits made with honey with spices, raisins, candied fruit and covered with white or dark chocolate.

The history of susumelle is very ancient and in some ways mysterious, even the name is the subject of discussion: according to some it could derive from the words sesamun and mel, that is sesame and honey, and therefore descend from the sweets that in Ancient Greece were prepared in honor of the goddesses Demeter and Core.

There were also three types of susumelle (even if made in different shapes and ingredients from ours): noble, with white flour and intended for the rich; of the bagpiper, with mixed flour and waste ingredients, and of the good path good but intended for priests and friars.

In short, it seems that once upon a time the susumelle, unlike today, were not so good and not even appreciated by most people. Fortunately, that extreme poverty no longer exists and over time the good Calabrians, no longer discriminated against, have enriched them with ingredients that make them truly delicious. Now the susumelle are noble for everyone!
